Emma B. Erickson Johnson, widow of J. Earl Johnson, passed away on December 23, 2006 in Salt Lake City. She was born on June 6, 1926 in Pocatello. Emma was the eldest of six daughters born to Henry Ernest and Nina Bl Bagley Erickson.
Emma's childhood was spent in Lewisville, Idaho and she began her schooling there. In 1942 the family moved to Spokane, Washington, where her father worked for the United States Air Force during World War II. Emma graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane in 1945. Emma earned money for college by working at Galena Air Force Base in Spokane, General Electric and Hanford Atomic Energy in Richmond, Washington.
Emma attended the University of Idaho in Moscow and then transferred to Idaho State University in Pocatello. she received a Bachelor of arts Degree in 1951 in Home Economics Education. She later did her post graduate work at Utah State University.
Emma started her teaching career in St. Maries, Idaho. She then lived and worked in Kennewick, Washington; and served a Stake Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prior to accepting a position at the Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah. In 1960 she was called on a full time mission in the North Central State Mission.
Emma's next teaching position was for the LDS Church educational system in western Samoa in the south Pacific for three and a half years. she enjoyed learning the Samoan Culture and loved the people. When Emma's father died in 1962, she brought her mother to live with her in Samoa in 1984.
Emma met Earl Johnson of Smoot and they were married in June 1970 in the Logan LDS Temple. she commuted between earl's home in Star Valley and her job in Brigham City and was happy when retirement allowed she and Earl to be together full0time. Emma loved Star Valley, the ranching life and the beautiful surroundings of the area. She was an active member of the Smoot and Fairview LDS Wards and was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
Emma was a life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. she held callings in Relief Society, Primary, Sunday School and did missionary service.
Earl died December 23, 2003 and Emma left this life exactly three years later.
In addition to her dear husband, Emmawas preceded in death by her parents; sister, Blanche Owens; and brother-in-law, Bob Anderson.
Emma is survived by four sisters, Wanitta Anderson of Tacoma, Washington; Moretta (Daniel_ Forsch, San Antonio; Gladys (George) Dressler, Sequim Washington; and Ruth (Robert) Frederick, Salt Lake City. She is also survived by her sister Blanche's husband, J. Lyle Owens and his wife, Nita, of Orem. Emma was a loving aunt and substitute grandmother to many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Emma Erickson Johnson will be held on Saturday, Dec 30, 2006 in the Fairview LDS Church at noon.
Viewings will be held on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Schwab Mortuary and Saturday from 10:30-11:45 a.m. at the church.
