"There were four brothers in the regiment by the name of Shontell, all six-foote, and brave soldiers. One of them died of disease while in the service; William is chief of police in the city of Brainard, Minn."

FORMER SHELBY MARSHAL DIES AT MIDDLEVILLE
Middleville, March 21 - William Shontell SR, died Thursday at his
home on Cherry St. of heart disease and dropsey. Mr. Shontell was a corporal of
Company E, Eighth Regiment, Vermont Volunteers for nearly two years in the
Civil War and was discharged owing to disability, Feb. 8, 1863. He and his wife
have lived here since 1902. Mr. Shontell was a florist. Jan 1 of this year
they moved to Grand Haven, but Returned March 1. Jan. 20, Mrs. Shontell, aged 90
years fell and sustained a double fracture of the left leg below the knee and
is confined to her bed. Mr. Shontell was marshal at Shelby for several years
before moving here. The funeral will be held at the home of H. J. Chapman
Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. C. E. Wood, officiating. Burial will be
made here.
