Singer. María Josefina Aguilar Sixtos was a renowned Mexican contralto singer considered one of the best voices in the history of Mexico. She had her debut at the Main Theater of the City of Puebla playing the role of Aída. She was a disciple of Fanny Anitúa and carried out successful artistic tours through several countries, including Italy, France, Argentina, Cuba, Brazil and the United States. She highlighted her participation with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra conducted by José Iturbi, where she was invited to interpret de Falla's El amor brujo in the presence of Pastora Imperio, for whom she had created that work. She also performed with the New York Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Arturo Toscanini. During a performance of "Carmen" at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, she suffered an accident to her left foot that resulted in her leg being amputated, forcing her to withdraw from the opera. In her last years, she dedicated herself to teaching singing and piano classes.
