The steamship New Orleans, Capt. Halsey, from New York, with an assorted cargo, arrived at her wharf at a late hour on Monday night. Capt. Halsey reports on Friday the 9th inst. at 7:30 P.M., when about 120 miles southeast-by-east from South Pass, the steamer's cylinder head and cylinder broke, also cross head and piston rod. The first assistant engineer, Mr. McCready, was badly scalded and died in about three hours from the injuries he received. He was buried at sea on Sunday morning. | The Times-Picayune, 14 May 1884
