Allen, John E.

John E. Allen, 99, a longtime resident of Summit Street in the West Side of Kansas City, MO passed away April 2, 2008. For a long time he wished to live to be 100 years old, he almost made it. He was born near Lebanon, Missouri August 16, 1908. His wife, Edith (Woods) Allen passed away March 11, 1995. When John was a young man, he was a hobo and rode trains to follow the harvest in Western Kansas. He had many stories to tell about his days spent riding the trains. For the last 6 years, John made his home at the Woodbine Healthcare Nursing Center in Gladstone, Missouri. He made many friends of the nursing staff and caretakers while he was there. We wish to thank all the nurses and staff for their caring and love. While John was living on Summit Street, he cared for many animals, including squirrels, raccoons, and wild neighborhood cats who adopted John. John was famous for loving his cats. He fed cats at the house he owned across the street from where he lived for over 50 years. When he moved into the nursing home, he left behind several cats that were taken care of by a couple of women who worked nearby in downtown Kansas City. John was a member of the Iron Workers Union Local 10 from September, 1949 until he retired in September, 1974. He was most appreciative of the smallest things in life. He learned to dance and for many years, enjoyed dancing at the Parks and Recreation dances. He especially enjoyed making sure that no women were left alone without a partner to dance with. He is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Marilyn Biggs, Las Vegas, NV and Muriel Kisse, Bismarck, ND, and several others living in Lebanon, MO. Visitation is at the Highland Park Funeral Home, 41st and State Avenue, Kansas City, KS, 66102 from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 4th. Burial at the Lebanon City Cemetery, Lebanon, MO on Monday, April 7. Online condolences may be expressed at www.Highlandparkfh.com. (Arrangements: Highland Park Funeral Home & Crematory State Avenue at 41st Street Kansas City, Kansas 66102 (913) 371-0699)
