Walter Olin McNair
July 15, 1929 - August 3, 2023
United States Navy and Army Veteran

W.O. McNair was born on July 15th, 1929 in Abbeville, SC, the second child to Olin and Mamie McNair. His 94 years were filled with love for God, family, and country.

As you travel I-75, I-95, I-10 and I-4 you can think of W.O., who spent 45 years in roles ranging from crew member to superintendent, building bridges as far north as Virginia, south as Alligator Alley, west to Pensacola, all east to Jacksonville Beach. He often talked about walking all of the Southeast when it was nothing but a swamp. For the past 28 years Theresa and he, together, managed Keystone Village Apartments.

W.O., known as PawPaw to many, would frequently be found at family gatherings with the littles. Talking and playing with the babies and toddlers on the floor or asking the older kids to catch him up on their lives at school or at work. He loved people and he loved them well, family and strangers alike. Raise your hand if you ever tried to get him in or out of a restaurant without him stopping to talk to families with small kids on the way!!!

He will be missed for so many things, above them all was that he loved us so very well. He also taught us how to love one another and we know what to do to honor him now.

W.O. is preceded in death by his parents Olin Purse McNair and Mamie Hardy McNair; his brother James McNair, sister Audrey Byrd, Son in Law Walter (Tony) Defoe, and great-grandson Christopher Hodge.

W.O. is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Theresa Langen McNair; children Joan Defoe, Jennifer (Danny) Hodge, Melissa Doty, Katrina (Stan) Furlong, and William (Sally) Hatcher, brothers Ray Payne and Rondell Payne, as well as a multitude of grand, great grand, and great-great grandchildren who were so special to him.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Saturday September 2nd at St William Catholic Church in Keystone Heights, Florida. A private burial will take place at the Jacksonville National Cemetery on Monday, September 4th.
