Alma Cleveland Cantrell Barrett was born in Georgia, on October 23, 1886, to Emily Lavinia Jackson (1854-1892) and George Bright Barrett (1850-1909).
Alma's parents were married on September 30, 1869 in Dawson County, Georgia; Alma was the last born of their nine children.
After George left the family and Alma's mother passed away in 1892, six-year-old Alma was sent on a train from Georgia to be fostered by a distant relation, Daniel Webster Morgan and his wife Beulah Vesta Cantrell Morgan in Waco, Texas. Alma changed her birth middle name, from "Cleveland" to "Cantrell", in honor of her step-mother. (Webster Morgan and Beulah Cantrell had been married in Forsyth County, Georgia on October 9,1890.)
A week after her 17th birthday, on 27 Nov 1904 in McLennan County, Texas, Alma married 18-year-old Michael Ryan Speegle, who was born in Speegleville, Texas, a city which was named after his pioneering grandfather, Israel Washington Speegle. They had eight children together--two, not surviving infancy. Alma and Michael were married for over fifty-five years, until her death.
