Walter Bicknell Sr. Former Resident Of Golden Dies Sunday
Walter H. Bicknell Sr., old-time Golden resident, passed away at a convalescent home In Denver Sunday morning, October 8, after a long illness. He had been in failing health for the last five years and had been a patient at the home for the last year. He was 83. Mr. Bicknell was born on October 6, 1861 in England, where he made his home until 1888 when he came to the United States and directly to Denver. In 1893, he moved his family to Golden and maintained a home here until 1920 when he returned to Denver. Mr. Bicknell's first wife, whom he married in England, died while they were living in Golden, and his second wife, the former Mrs. Elizabeth Bryant passed away six years ago. He then married Mrs. S. A. Collier, a sister of his second wife. They were daughters of the late Elizabeth Davis, an old Golden pioneer. He was employed as railway train man on the Colorado and Southern railroad for over thirty seven years and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway trainmen. He was also a member of the Sons of St. George, a society of natives of England living in America, and the Woodcraft Circle. Surviving him are: three sons, John H. of Denver, Frank P. of Arvada, and Walter H.. a prisoner of war in the Philippines, who was a naval commander in charge of the supply base at Cavite at the time of the fall of Bataan. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Olinger Mortuary at 1 p. m. Wednesday. Interment was in Golden cemetery.
