He was the youngest of the famous Bent brothers who built Bent's Old Fort on the Santa Fe Trail. Robert was killed and scalped by Comanche Indians on the southern plains. He was originally buried north of Bent's Old Fort in present day Colorado. His remains were later disinterred and, on 01 Dec 1853, reinterred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis. Today Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site is administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
