He was one of the 11 children of Silas Bent and brother to Charles, William and Robert Bent of Bent's Old Fort fame. He died of disease and was originally buried at Bent's Old Fort. Later his remains were disinterred and moved to Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis where he is buried in the same grave with his brothers John and Robert. In 1833, George Bent and his brother Robert Bent built what was known as Bent's Old Fort as a place to trade with the southern Cheyenne and Arapaho indians. For much of its 16 year existence, it was the only major white American permanent settlement on the Santa Fe Trail between Missouri and the Mexican settlements. It was destroyed under mysterious circumstances in 1849.

Explorer John C. Fremont used the fort to stage his expeditions. In 1841, the brothers employed Kit Carson as a hunter.
