RUTH MANNING OBITUARY
MANNING Ruth Harvey Manning, age 96, a Westport resident for more than 60 years, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at Westport Health Care Center. Known for her love of opera and classical music, she shared her knowledge and deep love of music with her many piano students and all who knew her. She was born in Chicago Ill. and was the daughter of the late Lelburn and Mabel Wood Harvey. At the tender age of 14, she supplied piano background music for silent movies including D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation." In addition to her teaching, she played string bass with the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra and served as a pianist/organist for the First Church of Christ Scientist in Westport. Mrs. Manning was a devout admirer of music, the philosophy of Dr. Albert Schweitzer and the music dramas of Richard Wagner, particularly the "Ring" Cycle. An ardent advocate of human and animal rights, she reflected her philosophies in her home and garden, Peaceable Kingdom, offering sustenance to birds and wild animals who suffered the intense development of Westport during post World War II years. The informal garden surrounding her home grows old-fashioned perennials and specimen shrubs and trees. A framed needle work near her two grand pianos advises, "The earth has music for those who listen." Mrs. Manning's children born of her second husband, Dr. Eric Berne, attended Westport schools. Her son, Peter, is a well respected opera conductor, teacher and author in Europe. Her daughter, Ellen, was the library director of the Windsor School in Boston, where a new library wing bears her name. Mrs. Manning is also survived by two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Crosby of Salem, Ore.; and two cousins, Janet Ramsey Aley of Westport and Charles Harvey Ramsey of Wallingford. She was predeceased by her daughter Ellen; by her brother, Bill Harvey; and three former husbands, Carleton (Scotty) Fay, Dr. Eric Berne and George Manning. A private burial will be held. The family of Mrs. Manning will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 5 at the home of Janet Aley, 185 Wilton Road, Westport. All are welcome. The Harding Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
