J. L. Root of Walshville celebrated his birthday Sunday on the farm where he was born 99 years ago. His father, C. C. Root, a blacksmith, came west to Illinois more than a hundred years ago. Evidence of his skill as a blacksmith still can be seen in the tools, etc.. that he made at his forge. C. C. Root, was a progressive man for those days, he bought and sold mules locally, as well as taking flatboat loads down the Mississippi River into the deep South shortly after the Civil War.
J. L. Root (Joe) tells of chicken roasts he had as a boy at the kiln, his father had men who would make the brick for the large two story house, that was gutted by fire several years ago, then Joe had the top story taken off and made into a brick bungalow, where he now lives. Its very interesting to hear Joe tell of trips to St. Louis with his father when they took dressed meat in wagons and crossed the river on the ice. Sometimes the ice was not safe, and they would plank a road across the river, when the ice broke up they would haul the planks out and wait for the next freeze. His mind is very clear and you would have to hear him tell these facts of the past for full enjoyment. At present time his health is exceptionally good for a man nearly 100 years old. Especially after saying he was unable to work a day until he was 18 years old. His daughter Mrs. Delphia Siemens, lives with him and cares for him. Mrs. Root passed away in 1954, helping him celebrate his birthday were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kirkland, of Sorento and Mr. and Mrs. Percy Kessinger, and Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Jarman, and children of Walshville.
