GEORGE G. ROOT, retired coal miner of Hillsboro, died Friday morning, December 22, at 11:50 a.m. at his residence, 211 Fairgrounds Avenue, he had been ill only 3 days when his death occurred, after a severe heart attack. George Grant Root, a native of Montgomery County, was born near Walshville, and he spent nearly all of his life in this county and in Bond County except for a few years when he and his wife lived in Mazon several years ago, and have lived here ever since then.
Mr. Root was a son of Chauncey C. and the late Cynthia Prather Root, he was born February 15, 1864 and at his death was 80 years 10 months and 7 days. On February 22, 1887, he married Miss Jennie May Boyd, at Walshville, who was a sister of Jessie Boyd, Coroner of Montgomery County. Mr. and Mrs. Root, located in Hillsboro years ago and Mr. Root was employed here as a miner for many years, until he was no longer able to follow such strenuous work.
Surviving the decedent are his wife, one daughter, Ina, the wife of John McGurty of Mazon, and three sons, Jessie Steve Root, who is the employer of the Federal Government in Panama Canal Zone, Victor B. Root of Salem, and George G. Root of Mazon, seven grandchildren also survive and one brother, J. L. Root of Walshville, one son Robert C. Root, and one daughter Bessie Maude Root, preceded him in death, with several brothers and sisters. Mr. Root was a member of the Progressive Miners Union of America. The funeral service was held at the Bass Funeral home in Hillsboro, Tuesday afternoon, with the Rev. Ezra Keller as the officiant. Burial was made in Kirkland Cemetery, near Sorento, Illinois.
