Bernard "Bunny" Rice, 72, of 1012 Emmet St., Kingsford, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, surrounded by his family. He was a son of the late Leo and Hazel (Vandehey) Rice. He was a life long resident of Kingsford and graduated from Kingsford High School in 1948, alongside his beloved wife of 50 years, Shirley M. (Staple) Rice. He was a life long member of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford and a member of the Michigan National Guard for six years.

Bunny was an avid Kingsford Flivver, Green Bay Packer and Chicago Cub fan. He coached area Little League, Babe Ruth and his daughters' softball teams for many years. He especially enjoyed following his childrens' and grandchildrens' involvement in school and athletics. He had an overall passion for sports.

Bunny drove school bus for Breitung Township School System for several years. He and Shirley owned and operated Rice's Fried Cakes and he was a salesman for Rice Juice Company.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; a son, Bill (Sheree) Rice of Kingsford; seven daughters, Patti (Ron) Schneider, Vicki (Ford) Waterman, Debbie (Bill) Johnson, Lori (Jim) Machus, Jodi (Dave) LaVarnway, Tami (Jon) Olson, all of Kingsford, and Jackie (Steve) Schaut of Aurora, WI; his brothers, William (Dolores) Rice of Kingsford and Leo Rice of Florida; his sister-in-law Lois Rice of Kingsford; 17 grandchildren, Tanya (Dennis) DalSanto; Tara (Scott) Person, Aaron and Benjamin Schneider, Bill (Vivian Miller), Bjorn and Brent Johnson, Bradley and Kimberly Machus, Jamie LaVarnway, Matthew Rice, Michael, Kaylin and Daniel Olson, Mike, Tyler and Trever Schaut; five great-grandchildren, Dylan and Victoria DalSanto, Austin and Abigail Person, Carly Schneider, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Jackie, Melvin, Robert and James; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Agnes Staple, and a grandson, Paul Waterman.

Prayer services were held Feb. 5, at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. His life was celebrated with gratitude and joy at 11 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 6, at American Martyrs Catholic Church, Kingsford. Fr. Chris Gardiner and Fr. Alan Mayotte concelebrated the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial was in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain. His grandsons and sons-in-law served as pallbearers.

"Bunny was the most wonderful husband and father the Lord could have blessed us with. We will miss him, but have the assurance of being reunited with him again in Heaven."
