Helen Elaine (Thiessen) Berg was born November 27, 1938 in Grant, Nebraska to Jacob and Elizabeth Thiessen. She was the eighth child born to a family of ten children.

The family moved to a farm near Dallas, Oregon in 1941. Helen attended the one-room school at Polk Station until she had finished the sixth grade. She attended Rickreall Grade school her seventh and eighth grades. She graduated from Dallas High School in 1956.

Music was a big part of Helen's life; singing in a trio with two of her four sisters, Betty and Norma, since she was nine years old. The Thiessen Sisters recorded an album in 1974.

Helen attended Multnomah Bible School after graduating from high school and then graduated from Oregon College of Education with a degree in childhood education with a minor in music in 1963. Her first teaching position was with the Willamina School District and she retired from teaching in that district in 1994.

Helen married Don Berg on August 8, 1964. Two sons were born from this union: Jonathan David and Paul Marvin. She took a break from teaching in Willamina District to teach at the Evangelical Bible Church Kindergarten when her boys were small.

After retirement Helen continued as a substitute teacher in the Willamina district. She enjoyed scrapbooking with friends as well as working with Senior Services helping people in need of assistance. Traveling with her sisters was a highlight of retirement.
