Abiah V. Hesser
Mrs. Hesser, 92, Pioneer Nichols Resident, Dies
Nichols - Mrs. Abiah V. Hesser, 92, a pioneer resident of this community, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Olive Meese,in Nichols at 8 a.m. today, following a lingering illness. She had made her home with her daughter the past 12 years.
Born in Virginia, the daughter of George and Effie Pringle (sic), on November 14, 1848, she moved west with her family when a small girl and settled near Bloomington, Illinois, where they lived until the close of the Civil War. Mrs. Hesser recalled having heard the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates during this period.
Soon after the family came to Iowa, she was married to Daniel W. Younkin, and to this union two children were born, Frank Younkin of Denver, Colorado, and Mrs. Olive Meese of Nichols. Her husband died in 1885, and she was married later to Caleb A. Hesser, a Civil War veteran, who died suddenly on January 5, 1921.
Always active in community affairs, Mrs. Hesser helped to organize the Christian church in 1872, and for a number of years has been the only surviving charter member. She was a past noble grand of the Rebecca order; a member of the Nichols chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and of Rose Croix Shrine, Muscatine.
Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Meese; a son, Frank Younkin of Denver, Colorado; an adopted daughter, Mrs. J. H. Watson, Binger, Oklahoma; one brother, George Pringle (sic) of Kendrick, Oklahoma; and three granddaughters, Mrs. E. D. Steward, Wichita Falls, Texas, Mrs. R. H. Beers, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Mrs. C. H. Vincent, Binger, Oklahoma.

Mrs. Abiah Hesser Final Rites Held at Nichols Church
Nichols - Funeral services for Mrs. Abiah V. Hesser were held Thursday afternoon from the Christian church in Nichols. Rev. Charles R. Hagee, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. Frank W. Sutton, pastor of the West Liberty Christian church conducted the services.
Harry Lewis and Archie Ditmers of West Liberty, accompanied by Mrs. Ora Nichols at the organ, sang, "It Is Well With My Soul," "In the Sweet Bye and bye," and "Going Down the Valley." Flower attendants were Mrs. Anna Rosenfield, Mrs. Edna Kirchner, Mrs. Elsie Poole, Mrs. Alberta Kelly and Mrs. Hazel Poole.
Pallbearers were B. F. Nichols, Ira Pike, John Foley, Ray Swickard, W. R. Schmitt and Louis Kile.
Ushers, B. L. Metcalf and Fred Poole. Burial was made in the Nichols cemetery.
Among those who attended the services from out-of-town were Mrs. Mary Eby and son, Bob, of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. John Watson of Binger, Oklahoma; Mr. and Mrs. George Nicola of Muscatine.
