Joyce graduated from Jacksboro High School in 1954. Determined not to lose touch with her classmates, she started a monthly newsletter, which she continued without fail until just last year. Her loyal Jacksboro Tiger friends kept the tradition going in her honor. After high school, Joyce worked in the Jack County Abstract Office before moving to Austin. There she worked for the Texas Department of Agriculture until she moved to Bay City.
Joyce lived in Bay City, Texas for 65 years. She loved the people in Bay City, especially her "First National Bank family" with whom she worked as a Trust Officer for 23 years. On the last day of her life, she said she was going to heaven, but if she didn't get to heaven she hoped she would go to Bay City, because it would seem like heaven!
She will be remembered for her sense of humor. She was always quick with a joke, and even kept her caregivers laughing in her later months. Above all, we will always remember Joyce's love and devotion to her family. She cherished each and every generation of her family and extended family. A Garner reunion will be held after the first of the year to celebrate Joyce's life.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Angela Wendt Smith, sisters Eloise Garner McFarland, Anne Garner Hodge, Dorothy Garner Wallace and Margaret Garner Van Wormer, and brothers Daniel David Garner, Jr., Jack Holt Garner, James Andrew Garner and William Robert Garner. She is survived by her brother, Albert Lee Garner, 20 nieces and nephews and many great, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Joyce will be interred next to her daughter Angela at Cedervale Cemetery in a private family service. For those wishing to make memorial donations in Joyce's name, please consider contributing to the Bay City Cemetery Association, where Joyce served as a volunteer for many years.
