Isabella's parents are unknown, but we do know that she was born in Donegal, Ireland. She was married there and started her family there as well. On the passage to America (between 1830 and 1832), a daughter, Mary Jane, went overboard/died at sea. Isabella named her next little girl after this lost daughter (who told the story to her granddaughter, Mary Thelma Buford Scott.)

Isabella often went by the nicknames "Isabel" and "Bell." Her maiden name is confirmed by the death certificates of two of her children.

She was married to John McClintock and was the mother of six known children: Ann (married Cornelius Bishop), Alexander, George, James R., John Y., and Mary Jane (married William Miller Purdy).

She and her family lived near the small town of Etna in Scotland County, MO.
