At the age of three, Jean was adopted by Howard and Lillian McConnell who lived in Shelby, North Carolina. When the family farm burned down, they moved north to the Philadelphia area in search of work during the Great Depression—her father only had fifty cents in his pocket. It was in Philadelphia where Jean began developing her relationship with God while attending Crescentville Baptist Church— even during her formative days at the church, Jean was devoted to doing the Lord's work. It was also at Crescentville where she met her future husband Bob Maier.
Jean graduated from Olney High School, and subsequently graduated from Philadelphia Bible Institute, now Cairn University. Jean worked at Bell Telephone until she began to start a family. She later returned to the workforce and proceeded to work as a substitute teacher for Council Rock School District. Jean and Bob eventually settled in Richboro, PA where they were to remain for approximately 40 years. Being the animal lover that she was, Jean enjoyed having many pets over the years. Some of these memorable furry friends include Guinevere, Mickey, Bridget, and Sam.
Jean, as well as Bob, were very active members of Wycombe Baptist Church. They hosted church picnics, bible study groups and taught Sunday school. Jean and Bob dedicated much of their lives to the service of the Lord.
One of Jean's fondest memories in life were the yearly trips taken with the family to Ocean City, NJ where she enjoyed the quality time spent with her husband, her children, and her grandchildren.
Jean was a nurturing and committed spouse, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, teacher, friend, and confidant. She will be remembered for many attributes including her playful wit, love for family, devotion to Christ, gracious demeanor, cheerful disposition, and her formidable compassion. No matter where she was, or what troubles she was personally dealing with at a given time, Jean never hesitated to give a hand to those in need.
Relatives and friends are invited to Jean's Life Celebration on Wed. Nov. 29, 2023 at Davisville Church, 325 Street Rd., Southampton, PA from 10 to 11:00 AM. Services will begin at 11:00. Jean will be laid to rest at Whitemarsh Memorial Park in Ambler.
