"Henry Carrel, an old and highly respected resident of Los Gatos, passed peacefully away at 9 o'clock this morning after an illness of a little over a year. The deceased was born in Ohio in 1843. He had lived in the Santa Clara valley since 1885. He was for years a successful orchardist in the San Tomas district and four years ago moved to his late home on Saratoga avenue.
"At the age of 18 years Mr. Carrel enlisted in the 8th Illinois Volunteers. He was afterwards honorably discharged when the three months for which he had enlisted expired. He immediately re-enlisted in the 33rd Illinois infantry and served until the end of the war. He was with General Curtis in many engagements and with General Grant at the capture of Vicksburg. He helped make history at Baker's Hill, Champion, battle of Jackson, assault upon Spanish Fort and many other historic battles. His faithful service ended at Springfield, Ill., November 1865.
"The deceased was married in 1877 to Susannah Miller in Victoria, British Columbia. He leaves to mourn his loss his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Florence V. Harrub, of Los Gatos, and Mrs. Ida K. Scully, of Honolulu.
"The funeral service will be held at the family home on Monday at 2 p.m. E.O.C. Ord Post No. 82, G.A.R., of which he was an honored member, and E.O.C. Ord corps No. 51, W.R.C., are invited to be present. Cremation will be at Mt. Olivet on Tuesday."
