Captain Mathew Henderson of Tannochside, in the Parish of Bothwell, Co. Lanark.
His father was David Henderson of Tannochside and Tannoch of Ayr.
His mother was Elizabeth Broune or Broun
Born 4 March 1737, Edinburgh, Scotland.
Captain Mathew Henderson was connected though the marriage to James Boswell of Auchinleck but he himself I understand was never married and there are no records in connection with any marriage.
He met both Robert Burns, the poet and James Boswell of Auchinleck at St.James Square, Edinburgh, at his lodgings, where Henderson and Burns both stayed. He was also a member of the Poker and Capillaire Club in Edinburgh. His gambling habits got the better of him and he had to sell his estates that he inherited Tannoch in Ayrshire and Tannochside in Lanarkshire) to pay his debts off.
Connected through Marriage to James Boswell the dates:-
5 June 1705. - Sir. Hugh Campbell of Cessnock m. Margaret Boswell 2nd daughter of David Boswell of Auchinleck, and had a son Hugh Campbell Esq of Barquharrie.
Then
Either 8th or 10th January 1727. - Hugh Campbell Esq of Barquharrie m. Margaret or Marion Henderson daughter of David Henderson of Tannochside and sister of Captain Mathew Henderson.
Death Details
Died 27 November 1788 in Edinburgh (only official record that can be found with ease).
