MRS. C. MCCARTHY.
The grim reaper claimed, rather suddenly, on Sunday last, a visitor in our midst, in the person of
Mrs. Catherine McCarthy, wife of Mr. James McCarthy, of Randwick, Sydney, aged 68 years;
The late Mrs. McCarthy was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adiel Whitton, of Ghinni Creek, Manning River. As Miss Catherine Whitton she was married at Kempsey, in 1889, to Mr. James McCarthy. The happy couple resided at Kempsey until about 1912, Mr. McCarthy being the first saddler employed by the late Mr. W. T. Dangar. About 22 years ago a move was made to Sydney, and lately Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy have resided with their daughter, Mrs. O'Brien at Randwick. Three weeks ago the lady of our notice came to Port Macquarie to stay with her sister, Mrs. J. Fischer, whilst her daughter, Miss K. Fischer, was away on holiday. The re-union was a very happy one, but had a sad ending, Mrs. McCarthy passing away on Sunday last, the day she took ill. A sorrowing husband, and son and daughter, viz., Mr. J. McCarthy and Mrs. O'Brien, of Sydney, remain to mourn their loss. The son, Mr. J. McCarthy, has been a regular visitor to the Easter regattas for years past as a member of the crew of the 18 footer, Yendys. Two sisters, Mesdames J. Fischer Port Macquarie), and Lairn (Chullora), survive. The only brother, Mr. A. Whitton, died at John's River two years ago. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic portion of the Port Macquarie Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, in the presence of a fair gathering of friends and -relatives, there being some very nice floral tributes. The funeral service was taken by the Rev. Father Fillodeau. Mr. H. T. Wilkins conducted the funeral arrangements. Amongst the mourners were, the sorrowing husband and son, brother-in-law, Mr. P.McCarthy (Pembrooke), and nephew and niece, Mr. A. Whitton (John's River), and Mrs. Slyney (Moorland).
