Walter was born to Mikel and Pauline Kostra in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on August 18, 1927. Shortly thereafter he and his family relocated to the United States settling in Cleveland, Ohio. Walter graduated from high school in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1945 and became eligible for enlistment into the U.S. Army.
Walter enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1946 and was stationed at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, until his deployment into the European Theater in Germany in May 1946. At the end of World War II, Walter took an Honorable Discharge and briefly remained in Germany working as a civilian for the U.S. Army. After his service to the U.S. Army, he returned to the U.S. in 1948, and entered college at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in June 1951. Walter was employed in the geosciences industry and retired from BP Amoco in Denver, Colorado in 1993. He enjoyed the industry that took him to all parts of the U.S. and several foreign countries.
Walter resided in Denver, Colorado, for most of his adult life and married Maggie (Brian) Graham on September 1, 1989, in Lubbock, Texas. These two love birds carried on an 11-year "dating" relationship between Lubbock and Denver while they both were working until they wed in 1989. Walter and Maggie enjoyed keeping their gorgeous yard manicured for entertaining, travelling in the nearby mountains, and enjoying the professional sports of the Denver Broncos (football) and the Colorado Rockies (baseball).
After Walter retired, they moved to a beautiful retirement village at Lake Travis near Austin, Texas, where they spent countless hours enjoying the view of the lake from their balcony. With Walter being a curious history buff, he enjoyed learning about Texas history facts. He and Maggie then moved to the South Plains so Maggie could be closer to family. They resided in Plainview, Texas, at the time of Walter's death.
Walter was a 35-year member of the American Legion LCW Post 1 in Denver, Colorado, and a long-term member of the Elks Lodge in Denver and Plainview.
