He was born Aug. 9, 1926, in Fieldale to Samuel Giles Martin and Susie Hodges Martin. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters, Peggy Haynes, Vera Pruitt and Hester Hardwick; and five brothers, Estridge Martin, Virgil Martin, Fred Martin, Ralph Martin and Clinton Martin.
He graduated from Fieldale High School and attended Elon College. He served in the Army during World War II in occupied Japan. He retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. after 25 years of service. He was a charter member of the Fieldale Fire Department and a member of American Legion Post No. 11 in Bassett. He was past president and member of Fieldale-Collinsville Rotary Club for 48 years, where he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Vera Eggleston Martin of the home; a son, Randy Brown Martin of the home; and one brother, Curtis John Martin of Rocky Mount.
