Jacob "Jack" Suravitz
Dunmore, Pennsylvania
June 3, 1923 - May 24, 2023

Jacob Jack Suravitz, a lifelong resident of Scranton, Pennsylvania, died on Wednesday afternoon, May 24, 2023, in Geisinger-Community Medical Center in Scranton, just 10 days shy of his 100th birthday.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Louis and Anna Silberman Suravitz, he was a graduate of Scranton Central High School. Jack then went on to attend the Williamsport Technical Institute where he studied mechanics, a trade that helped him immensely when he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II and earned the rank of Aviation Machinist's Mate, Second Class.

Jack's life was characterized by his unbridled passion: for family, friends, and sports. An exceptional athlete himself, he put everyone's desires before his own. Yet he found pleasure in the simplest things, just spending time, especially with his wife, kids, grandkids, and great-grands, along with basking in their joy, happiness, and successes.

He was the go-to person for anyone in need. To that end, he rushed into a burning house to save the family inside. But once they were safe, he took his leave, without waiting for or wanting any thanks. In winter, he was the person everyone called if they were stuck in snow.

Jack was a unicorn, always supportive, encouraging, uplifting, accepting, and tolerant. He never raised his voice or spoke an unkind word. Everyone lucky enough to know him, loved him.

June 3, 1923 ---- May 24, 2023. And what he did between the dashes was to live an upstanding, exemplary life, filled with warmth, humor, love and kindness.

In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his sisters, Theresa Levy and Ruth Feinberg; and daughter-in-law Susannah Boswell Suravitz.

He was survived by his wife of 74 years, the former Gladys Rubin (married November 7, 1948); his children, Louis Suravitz of Scranton PA and Sherry Cohen (& husband Mitchell) of Cherry Hill NJ; grandchildren Josh, Justin, and Ali; great-grandchildren Eva, Zach, Julia, Claire, Perrie, and a baby girl due in September.

A private funeral service was held in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery and shiva was privately observed.
