John Brownlee was the son of Thomas Brownlee and Sarah (McDonnell) Brownlee. He married Harriett Ann Harrison (1843-1930) on March 7, 1866 at Galva, Henry County, Illinois. He was a veteran of the Civil War and died at the Soldier's Home in Danville. He was buried in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Polk County, Nebraska.

"Funeral. The funeral of John Brownlee late of Co. C 11th Regt. Ill., Cav., who dropped dead at barracks one [sic] Tuesday morning was conducted from the Protestant Chapel this morning at 9:30 o'clock, with burial in the home cemetery [incorrect]. Chaplian Ewers officiated."
