"Wm. C. Brownlee, 75, Will Be Buried Here

Word was received here this noon by James H. Boyd of the death of William C. Brownlee, former Galva resident, this morning in Iowa City, Iowa. The body will be brought here for burial Saturday [July 23] and short services will be held at Galva cemetery at 2 o'clock.

The son of Thomas Brownlee, early day dry goods merchant here, William C. Brownlee was in this business following his father's death [in 1900], and also was interested in the lumber business, the firm being Brownlee Bros. He moved away from here a number of years ago, and for some time was in the dry goods business in Waterloo, Iowa. Two years ago he retired from business in Montezuma, Iowa, on account of failing health. He was about 75 years of age.

He is survived by a wife and two married daughters. C. C. Maddox, of this city, is a brother-in-law."

"Conduct Brownlee Rites Here Saturday

Interment services for William C. Brownlee, former Galva resident who passed away last Thursday morning [ July 21] in Oxford, Iowa, were conducted at Galva cemetery Saturday afternoon [July 23] at 2 o'clock, in charge of Rev. J. C. Townsend, pastor of Galva Congregational church. Two solos were given by Mrs. Florence P. Best.

The following life sketch was read during the services:

"William Coupland Brownlee was born in Galva, July 26, 1859. He was the son of Thomas Brownlee and Elizabeth Coupland Brownlee. His boyhood and young manhood were spent here in Galva.

In 1893 he was married to Sara Longnecker, and to this union were born two daughters, Helen and Doris. Later the family moved to Waterloo [Iowa] where they lived for 18 years.

During all these years he was an active and enthusiastic member of the Congregational church, always retaining his love for the church of his boyhood in Galva.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Harold A. Clearman [Helen] and Mrs. Thomas E. Martin [Doris], of Iowa City, and three grandchildren, Richard and Dorris Martin, and Sara Clearman.

The body was brought to Galva Saturday morning in an Iowa City funeral car, several of the relatives accompanying. Relatives who attended the services from out-of-town included: Mrs. W. C. Brownlee; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Clearman and husband of Oxford, Iowa, and Mrs. Thomas Martin and two children, of Iowa City; Mrs. George Brownlee, of Chicago; Mrs. Barbara Page, of Princeton, sister of Mrs. Brownlee; Senator and Mrs. Clearman, of Oxford, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Burnett, of Buda [Iowa]. C. C. Maddox, brother-in-law of Mr. Brownlee, and Raymond Maddox, also attended the services.

The Iowa relatives were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Boyd before returning home that afternoon."
