Pioneer Dies of Exposure
Wandering away from the ranch home of his son, Thomas Shephard, pioneer Golden citizen, spent the night in the mountains and Sunday morning was found breathing his last. He died five minutes after he was found by a searching party. Mr. Shepard had gone to the ranch of his son Archie, in Golden canon, a month ago. Saturday afternoon he went for a walk, and must have lost his bearings in the mountain gulches and could not find his way back to the house. His son and neighbors searched all night for him, and Sunday morning they found him lying in a small gulch, where he had fallen from an embankment. Mr. Shephard had been in a weakened condition for several weeks. He was 75 years of age, and had lived in Golden for fifty years. He was a native of England, and came to America when he was a small boy. During most of the fifty years he spent here he engaged in mining, teaming and c contracting. He is survived by four sons, Richard, Thomas and Archie of Golden, and Albert, who is in the U.S. Army in France. There are also two daughters, Mrs. Anna Rhoades and Mrs. Nellie Simpson. Funeral services were conducted at the Woods & Sanders chapel by Rev. Lee on Tuesday, interment being at Golden cemetery. The Colorado Transcript, August 8, 1918
