Lorenzo Dow Crawley was born in Decatur County, Tennessee to William Mitchell Crawley and Amanda Smothers Crawley. He married Clara Butler there on October 4, 1914. After her untimely death in 1923, he joined his father and several brothers who had relocated to Oklahoma in 1917. He too suffered an untimely death and left an orphaned daughter, Tennessee "Tennie" Crawley to be raised in the home of her Uncle Leonard.
