Born in Decatur County, Tennessee, to William Mitchell Crawley (1859-1949) and Amanda Smother Crawley (1860-1902). He had six sisters and three brothers. They were: Flora Crawley Lepping (1879-1958), Tennessee Crawley Fisher (1882-1918), Nellie Crawley Phillips (1883-1956), Lorenzo Dow Crawley (1888-1926), Bertha Crawley Mayberry (1890-1983), Zenobia Crawley Fisher (1892-1981), Cecil Crawley (1894-1967), Leonard Crawley (1897-1969), and Exie Crawley Goodman (1899-1968). He relocated to Okfuskee County, Oklahoma in 1918 along with his father and brother Leonard. His brother Lorenzo Dow joined them in 1923.
