Publisher. A native of Scotland, Robert was born in Annan in the County Dunfriesshire.
Clarke emigrated to America in 1840 with his parents and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was educated at the common schools and later graduated from Woodward College. Clarke became a bookkeeper for William Hanna and then became a clerk at a bookstore in Cincinnati. He became the store's proprietor in the 1850's and specialized in American publications. The store was re-established as the Robert Clarke and Company in 1858.
Clarke became an important publisher and also edited several major publications including "Campaign in Illinois" by Colonel George Rogers Clark, "Pioneer Biographies" by James McBride, and "Captivity with the Indians" by Captain James Smith.
Clarke never married but amassed a very large collection of books in his personal library numbering over 7,000. His collection was later purchased by William Cooper Procter and later became property of the University of Cincinnati.
Clarke was also one of the first members of the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society of Cincinnati.
He died in the library at his residence in Glendale, Ohio in 1899 when he was 70 years old.
