Based on enlistment, his service included Battles of Ft Henry,Tn(Feb 6), Ft Donelson,Tn(Feb 16) and Shiloh,Tn(Apr 6-7, 1862). The 8th, 12th & 14th Iowa comprised 4/5ths of the troops in "The Hornet's Nest" at Shiloh. They held their ground for 10 hours against attack after attack allowing the Union time to bring reinforcements to rear lines and snatch victory from defeat. Finally surrounded by 10 times their number and out of ammunition they had no choice but to throw down their arms and surrender only to see many of their number shot down with their arms in the air. The majority of all three regiments were captured. The enlisted men were sent to various prisons in Alabama & Georgia suffering great privation. They were paroled and exchanged at various times in 1862. In 1863, the 14th was reunited at Davenport,IA. Duty at Cairo,IL until Jan 1864. Participated in the Red River Campaign Mar 10 – May 22 1864. This included Ft DeRussey, Battle of Pleasant Hill, Cane River Crossing, Occupation of Alexandria, Mansura. March through Arkansas and Missouri in pursuit of Price Sep 17 –Oct 25. Unit mustered out Nov 16 1864.
