Obituary – Cal Broughton (appeared in The Monroe Evening Times (Jan. 2, 1968)
Cal Broughton – Stricken at 72
“A widely-known former sheep breeder and judge, Cal Broughton, 72, died at 1:30 p.m. Sat, Dec. 30, in his home of a heart attack. He had had a heart condition. The past few days had had a cold.
Mr. Broughton was a former Magnolia Township chairman and member of the Rock County Board of Supervisors before moving to the village. He was a member of the Albany Masonic lodge and past president of the Shropshire Registry Association.
He was born in Rock County, Aug. 19, 1895, a son of Arthur and Alice Mae Longfield Broughton. He was married June 25, 1916 to Georgia Smith and they observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1968. They lived on the Broughton home place, Rock-Green County Line, four miles east of Albany, until retiring to the village in November 1965.
The Broughton family’s interest in sheep dated back to the Civil War Days when Aaron Broughton, grandfather to Cal Broughton, was a pioneer in sheep breeding. His son, Arthur Broughton, founded and developed the famed Broughton Shropshire.
Surviving Cal Broughton are his widow, Georgia, two sons, Arthur, Silver Springs, MD; and Lloyd, Marshall; three daughters, Mrs. Guy Reasa, rural Belleville; Mrs. William U’Ren, DeKalb, IL, and Mrs. Arlene Ferguson, Crystal Lake, IL, and ten grandchildren.
His mother died June, 1939; his father died in 1917. Three brothers and a sister preceded him in death; Lynn, Oct. 1, 1964; Harry, March 14, 1963, Roy, Aug. 10, 1937, and Mrs. Orville Jones, May 11, 1955.
Funeral Services for Mr. Broughton were at 2 Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 2, in the Sharer Funeral Home, Rev. Charles Fox of the Baptist Church officiated. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Albany.
Pallbearers were Wilbur K. Dehmer, Fay Jones, and Dwight Bump, Jr., all of Albany; Harold Smout, rural Brooklyn; Herman Anderson, Janesville, and Alexander Moir, Madison.”
