John was born in Albemarle Co, VA probably to Moses Damron and Aggie Owl (probably Howell). According to Dameron-Damron family genealogist, Helen Foster Snow, John was a drummer in the Revolution War and was listed as sick at Valley Forge. The drum he played was passed to his son, John, Jr, who passed it down to his son John Shultz Damron. When John Shultz Damron left Texas to go to CA, they had to cross the Pegos River. They had too many items to cross, so the drum was abandoned.
Capt. John was married twice. His first wife was Anna Ladd, his first cousin. They were married circa 1779 in VA. His second wife was Cynthia who he married circa 1806.
Capt. John was also a traveling Methodist minister.
Due to county line changes at that time period, his will was written in Franklin Co, IL, and filed in Johnson Co, although today his body is interred in present day Williamson Co. His will was written in 1835, so he died sometime after that (Find A Grave doesn't accept circa dates or 1830s dates in the date fields above).
