Mary was born in Waddington, Yorkshire, England to William Dugdale and Elizabeth (Betty) Wilson. She had nine siblings: Elizabeth, John, George, Alice, Nancy Alice, Robert, Sarah, Ellen and Catherine.
Mary married James Casson on 19 October 1839 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. They had two daughters: Sarah and Hannah. Both of their daughters died in infancy. Mary and James emigrated to the United States about 1843 and settled in Nauvoo, Illinois. Her husband, James died in Nauvoo, Illinois in 1844.
Mary later married William Farrington Cahoon on 23 September 1845 in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois. They had four children: James Cordon Casson, Samuel Casson, Mary Ellen Casson, and George Edward Casson.
Mary died in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is buried there.
