William married first to a Sarah Ann Fitzgerald, daughter of Alex and Polly (Shadley) Fitzgerald, whom which he had one child. William served in the Civil War for the Confederacy in the 1st Creek Regiment formed in what is now Eufala, Oklahoma on Aug 19, 1861. Col Daniel Newman McIntosh was the commanding officer.
It is unknown if Sarah died before his military service started, however, their daughter was raised from about 1860 on by Amanda and Owen Davis. It was said that Mary was very angry with her father for abandoning her.

William is buried next to a grandchild, an unnamed child of his daughter May Agatha and William Simpson Lilley.
