Born in Columbus, Ga., he was the son of Mrs. Nell Taylor and the late Clarence E. Alford. He was employed by radio station WGAC since 1948 and had been sales manager there for six years.

A member of the Traveler's Protection Agency, the Aiken Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Augusta Jaycees, he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves. He entered the Army in 1942, attended Officers Candidate School at Ft. Belvoir, Va., served in Japan from 1945 to 1947 as a member of the Corps of Engineers and as adjutant general. He held the rank of major at the time of his discharge from active duty. He was an instructor at the Medical College in the Reserves and was in his third year of the G. and C.S. course.

As a member of the Warren Baptist Church, he served as a Sunday School teacher, associate superintendent of the Sunday School, a deacon and a term as chairman of the board of deacons there.
