Born posthumously (five months after the death of his father), the son of Captain George Dundas, 25th of Dundas, and Christian (née Stirling) Dundas.
He held the position of 26th Chief of the Name and Arms of Dundas from 1793.
He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire, and Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Linlithgowshire.
In 1818, James had the renowned architect William Burn design a new castle, and had Dundas Castle in Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland demolished and rebuilt to the Tudor-Gothic Style of the current structure. The reconstruction and landscaping costs became so great that the estate had to be sold in 1875.
