April 24, 1907. Rupert Cambridge, Viscount Trematon, a 2x great-grandson of HM Queen Victoria as well as a 3x great-grandson of HM King George III, was born.
Rupert was born in on this day in 1907 at Claremont House in Surrey, England as the 2nd child and only surviving son of Alexander Cambridge, 1st Earl of Athlone, formerly Prince Alexander of Teck, and his wife Princess Alice of Albany. Rupert was a hemophiliac, a disease he inherited from his maternal line and shared with many descendants of Queen Victoria, including his maternal grandfather, Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany who died as a result of it.
At birth he was known as His Serene Highness Prince Rupert of Teck, a Title he held until 1917 when, on the request of King George V, his family, along with many other members of the extended Royal family, relinquished their German Titles. After renouncing their birth Titles the family took the surname of Cambridge, after his maternal grandfather, Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. Shortly thereafter George V created his father Earl of Athlone and Viscount Trematon. Thus, Rupert assumed his father's secondary Title as a courtesy and became known as Rupert Cambridge, Viscount Trematon. Rupert was educated at Ludgrove School and Eton College. He then attended Trinity College in Cambridge.
In early April 1928 Rupert was driving with 2 friends on the road from Paris to Lyon. While overtaking another vehicle, Rupert's car hit a tree and overturned. One of his friends died instantly from his injuries. Rupert was taken to Belleville-sur-Saône with a slight fracture of the skull. However, his hemophilia played a contributing factor and 2 weeks after the accident, Rupert died from an intracerebral hemorrhage.
Five days after his death his funeral was held at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle in the presence of HM King George V and HM Queen Mary, The Queen Consort. He was buried in the Royal Vault at St George's Chapel. In late October 1928 his remains were re-interred in the Royal Burial Ground, Frogmore. His death and the subsequent death of his infant brother Maurice in 1910, meant that the title of Earl of Athlone became extinct in 1957 when his father died.
