Friar Gaudentius Orfali was named director of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum of Jerusalem in 1924, and chairman of the Palestine Oriental Society in 1925. He excavated and in part restored the Synagogue at Capharnaum between 1921 and 1926, and also excavated the Octagonal church in Capharnaum and the Basilica of Gethsemane, of which published the results. He died untimely in a road accident in 1926.
