Elsie was the first child of three, born to Tatiana and John Ben Benson. Elsie was a small child when her mother, Tatiana, died of the Spanish flu, which struck many villagers in Chignik Lagoon, Alaska about that time. Her father, a fisherman, and an immigrant from Sweden, spoke little English. He attempted to keep his three children but he couldn't manage taking them in his fishing boat. Villagers at the time had many deaths and severe illnesses in their own home. One family offered to adopt Elsie, but could not take more than one. Elsie's brothers were taken by their father to Unalaska, to the Jessie Lee Children's Home there. The three children remained in touch throughout their lives, thanks to their father and the villagers and their own desire to be united, while raised apart.

Elsie married and had children of her own. Her brother, Benny is buried at Kodiak City Cemetery, UAS Plot US 3511, Grove #198,
