Mrs. J. H. Kohley of Bentonville received word Friday of the tragic death of her nephew, Earl Thornton, Jr., in the Bennington carrier disaster.
Thornton, age 35, is a former Bentonville resident and he and his father are widely known in Rogers and Fayetteville as well as Bentonville where they ran a laundry several years ago.
Thornton entered the Navy at 17 years of age and was making a career of it. At the time of his death he was an officer with the rank of Ships Clerk.
Besides his father, he is survived by his wife and three children of Charleston, S.C. where he was stationed.
Burial will be in New Orleans, La.
