Son of Oliver B. Hayes and Sarah C. Hightower. Richard died the day after he was shot in a duel (of sorts) with William Hawkins Polk, brother of James K. Polk, then a future President of the U.S.

All known accounts state that Richard is buried in the Richard Hightower Cemetery in Williamson County, TN. He likely had a grave marker at some time but if anything remains of it it probably lies in the stack of broken slabs and stones near the few markers that do still exist.
