Frederick Hargreaves or Hargraves is buried, unmarked, in the western section of the cemetery. There's not a lot of biographical information available on Hargreaves' life; more information exists about his estate, which took 25 years to settle.

According to his death certificate Frederick Hargreaves was born on 11 July 1859 in Goldsborough, England, to John Hargreaves and Jane Asquith. Frederick never married. The 1910 census of Gardiner, Douglas Co., Oregon, finds Hargreaves working as driver of a cream wagon; the 1920 census reported "no occupation." The census records indicate he came to the United States in 1882/83 and was naturalized in 1890. He reportedly moved to Glenada about 1917 or 1918 from Gardiner.

Hargreaves died on 10 August 1920 in Glenada from heart disease. His obituary reported "He was a single man and had no relatives in this vicinity, except a brother who came here a few weeks ago to care for him during his illness."(1)

The Oregon State Archives have on file a handwritten statement from Hargreaves purporting to be his last will and testament. In this disorganized note is bequests to Francis Hargreaves of Victoria, British Columbia; "sister" Ann Hargreaves of the Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland; and mention of "nephews and nieces, sons and daughters of E. A. Hargreaves." Hargreaves names Frank Knowles as "executive without bond." This document is signed by Frederick Hargreaves, with Ed T. Maher and Grant Colter as witnesses. The balance of the estate after expenses were paid was $1078.12. Included in the expenses were $84.50 to Joseph Wisdom for "nursing and care of decedent," $19.00 to Dr. George Edwards for "medical attendance, $90.00 to Grant Colter for "care of decedent and wood furnished," traveling expenses for Francis Hargreaves to travel to his brother's home, and $10.00 for the cemetery lot in Glenada.

The estate's final settlement was dated August 8, 1921, a year after Hargreaves death, a very typical estate. Not so. An objection to the final settlement was made by Francis Hargreaves contesting the distribution of the estate and on 24 January 1922 the Circuit Court ordered that Francis receive one-half of the property then in possession of the executor, Frank Knowles, and that the other half be split among the other heirs (nine in all). No further distribution appears to have been made, however, probably because there was very little else to distribute, and Knowles died in 1929.

Francis Hargreaves determined by 1943 that all that remained was $100 worth of 1919 series U.S. War Savings Stamps (valued at $100) and 1000 shares of stock in the Umpqua Coal Company (valued at zero). In 1943 an order approving the supplemental final account and distribution was made by the court. After removing $30.00 for the new court administrator's (D. T. Bayley) expenses, $70 was distributed among Francis Hargreaves of Victoria, British Columbia, who received one half, with the other half going to George Hargreaves, Frank Hargreaves, Roy Hargreaves, John Hargreaves, Edwin Asquith Hargreaves, Richard Hargreaves, Mrs. Ethel Pearce, Mrs. Evelyn Thersen, Mrs. Myrtle McCreedy, and Bessie Hargreaves, all of British Columbia. The estate was finally declared closed by the Court on March 6, 1945, a quarter of a century after Frederick Hargreaves death!
