Albert Carlton, third child of Daniel Wilson Carlton and Sallie Ann (Murphy) Carlton, was born May 9, 1845.

According to family sources, he was born in Marion County, Florida, but Albert was unsure of his birthplace. In October 1911 in his Civil War pension application, he cited, "Florida-Alachua or Marion Co." With his parents he moved to Hillsborough County, Florida prior to 1850 and in the 1850s to Fort Meade, then Troublesome Creek, Manatee (now Hardee) County.

Albert enlisted at Fort Myers as a private on June 15, 1864 in Company B, Second Florida Cavalry, United States Army.

In Manatee County on October 11, 1868, Albert was married by the Rev. John W. Hendry to Martha Winfield McEwen, born February 10, 1851, Washington County, Georgia, daughter of the Rev. William Penn McEwen and Rutha (Sheppard) McEwen. (Mrs. McEwen's first name also is given by some descendants as Ruth and her maiden name as Shephard and Shepherd.)

They homesteaded about four miles west of present-day Wauchula on the now Vandolah Road in what is now known as the Oak Grove community.

A cattleman, his mark and brand was "A.C." He originally had 120 acres, which he increased to 340 acres, 80 acres being set in oranges. He also grazed his cattle on the open range.

In October 1903, a seedless orange, commonly known as Carlton's seedless orange, was found in a 75-year-old tree in Albert's grove of 950 others, west of Wauchula. The orange, classified commercially as "Fancy Golden Bright," was widely distributed by a nursery and became quite well known. The variety is no longer in commercial production.

His son Doyle Elam was to become governor of Florida 1929-33.

With his son Charles Jesse, he opened a bank in Wauchula.
