In Manatee County on October 11, 1868, Albert Carlton was married by the Rev. John W. Hendry to Martha Winfield McEwen, born February 10, 1851, Washington County, Georgia, daughter of the Rev. William Penn McEwen and Rutha (Sheppard) McEwen. (Mrs. McEwen's first name also is given by some descendants as Ruth and her maiden name as Shephard and Shepherd.) They homesteaded about four miles west of present-day Wauchula on the now Vandolah Road in what is now known as the Oak Grove community.

Under the "Act of May 1, 1920," Martha W. Carlton on August 3, 1927 applied for a pension as the widow of Albert Carlton of Co. B, 2d Regiment Florida Cavalry. W. W. Bateman of Wauchula, B. Marion Reed (Tampa undertaker), and Doyle E. Carlton gave supporting affidavits. Under date of July 17, 1928, the widow was granted a pension in her own right at the rate of $30 per month from August 8, 1927 and at the rate of $40 per month from June 4, 1928.

Martha W. Carlton died August 6, 1944 at Wauchula with burial beside Albert in Wauchula Cemetery.
