He was the son of Col Daniel and Hannah (Howard) Lothrop, an early settler of Leeds, ME. (History of Leeds, Stinchfield, p.11). His first wife was Sally Whiting who died in Leeds 1807 (Leeds vital records). He married Lucy Gilbert 10 Aug 1808 (Leeds vital rec).
