Enlisted in the Continental Army on 1 December 1776 and served in the Rhode Island Militia as a Private under Captains Uriah Crandall, Samuel Bissell, George Willery, Samuel Gorton, Phineous Kenyon, David Herington and under Colonels Charles Dyer and Thomas Potter.

His length of service was for 25 months.
