NEWPORT NEWS - Shirley Sheperd Brown, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Riverside Hospital surrounded by family. She had moved from the Bennetts Creek area of Suffolk in 2004.

Shirley was born in Hutchinson, Kan., on Dec. 5, 1926, to the late H. Welker and Ruth Sheperd. She attended Quincy Senior High School, Quincy, Ill., Ward Belmont College, Nashville, Tenn., and Indiana University. Shirley was an antique dealer over the past 30 years at the Black Swann, Portsmouth and the Galleria Antiques in Yorktown. She decorated community showcases monthly at the Chesapeake Retirement Community, Newport News. She had won numerous awards and was well known for her artistic ability.
She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Becky Brown of Williamsburg; four sons, Dr. Bruce Brown and his wife, Diana of Yorktown, Brad Brown of Toronto, Canada, Brian Brown of Norfolk and Dr. Brent Brown and his wife, Ann Dalton of Suffolk; one brother, Robert Sheperd of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Beatrice Jones of N. Myers, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11a.m. Monday, June 9, 2008, in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Veterans Cemetery with Chaplain Nancy Hayes officiating. Immediately following the service, family and friends will gather at the home of Brent and Ann Dalton Brown, 1870 Cherry Road North, Suffolk.
The family would like to thank the staff at Riverside Hospital and the Chesapeake Retirement Community for their special care and compassion during our time of need.
