Benjamin Wells, one of the oldest residents of Ogdensburg, died at his home, 24 Elizabeth street, at one o'clock this morning. Mr. Wells was born in the town of Lisbon, on the 27th day of July, 1815. He early made his home in Ogdensburg and for 22 years was one of the most trusted and skilled engineers of the old American Line of Steamers that formerly ran between this port and Lewiston. Soon after the sale of steamers Mr. Wells became the Superintendent of of the Ogdensburg Gas Company, which position he held for eight years. Subsequently in company with his son-in-law, Lewis Wallace, he established the shoe store of Wallace & Wells which business he continued until advancing years and ill health obliged him to retire. Fifty five years ago Mr. Wells married Polly M. Gardner, who survives him. Four daughters are living, Mrs. Stickney of Milford, NY; Mrs. John McGruer and Mrs. T. H. McCaffrey of Weedsport, NY, and Mrs. Lewis Wallace of New York City.

Mr. Wells was a man of vigorous personality that made him prominent and noticeable wherever he was. He had a large acquaintance and many friends and his death closes a long life of activity and usefulness.
